Ad Wars: CHANEL n.5 VS Miss Dior

chanel-missdior

The latest ads for CHANEL n.5 and miss Dior fragrances have been released in time to boost sales for Valentine’s Day. Both brands have chosen the short film ad, with Chanel calling back director Baz Luhrmann hoping to replicate the success of 2004 Le Film, starring Nicole Kidman.

CHANEL n.5 The one that I want

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen goes surfing in a Chanel swimsuit and matching board to clear out her mind, after, presumably, a fight with her husband. She looks very troubled: she feels something is wrong, or maybe regrets something she said. So she hurries back to her mansion trotting on the private beach only to see her husband leaving the house, but instead of stopping him she changes her wet swimsuit to a silk gown and sadly watches the car pull out. Her daughter arrives pulling the nanny’s arm and she hides her worries behind a smile, while finally noticing the note he left her. We can read on the envelope “to my heart I must be true” but she leaves it on her dressing table preferring to put on lipstick and merrily spay some Chanel n.5 in the air, to her daughter’s delight. They wave goodbye and the little girl goes to school while Gisele goes to work. She’s a top model, in case you were wondering. During a pause in the photo shooting (the photographer is Baz Luhrmann) she finally reads her husband’s letter. He still loves her! She must go find him and tell him she loves him back! She leaves the set at once and drives, weeping, the deserted road to the city where she throws her car keys to an invisible valet and finally reunite with him in a Lynchian theatre where he has been waiting all day listening to a cover of a the Grease song that inspired his love letter. They kiss and smile, and they are happy and in love again!

My thoughts: the Chanel ad is the celebration of marital love, who can overcome some bad days (symbolized by the waves and Gisele surfing them) and be renewed by a date night in the city. Unlike the Kidman ad, here love and family come before work. The choice of Gisele as a testimonial is quite fitting: she embodies the modern woman able to balance a successfull carreer and the care of her happy family.

The target: they are trying to attract new customers: working women in their early thirties are the main target.

Miss Dior #itsmissactually

Natalie Portman opens the door to the hotel valet bearing her wedding bouquet “your flowers Madame” he says politely to the soon-to-be bride. “It’s miss actually” she replies drily. Next thing we know, she’s walking down the aisle at her father’s arm. She looks terrified. At the last moment she stops, looks behind and murmurs “I’m sorry dad” while placing a lily of the valley from her bouquet on his lapel. She walks away and the world turns from black and white to colours. She’s so relieved that she takes off her shoes to run even faster and gets rid of her lovely bouquet who falls to the ground. Suddenly she’s in the country (must have been running a lot) where she takes off her wedding gown, revealing a black strapless mini dress under it. She’s running again. Now she’s on a rock by the sea, waiting for a helicopter coming to her rescue. She mounts a rope ladder in a rose petals storm and flies in the sunset, while the helicopter pilot lasciviously kisses her on the neck.

My thoughts: I think that the idea here is to portray a young woman who choses to escape a path already set for her (marriage) to live a more adventurous life. What I see is instead a spoiled rich girl who runs away with her lover on her wedding day in a very theatrical way, embarrassing her father and showing us that in the end she’s not that independent, since she runs from a man to another.

The target: young women in their twenties I guess. Natalie Portman is way older though.

Conclusions: neither is selling the dream, but the Chanel ad is more consistent. Dior did best in ads without a real story but with a strong Parisian mood, like this one. Valentine’s sales will proclaim the real winner!

Keira Knightley

I love Keira Knightley.

She’s a terrific actress and she chooses her roles wisely. She’s smart, pretty and the testimonial for Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle.

That’s enough to be annoying, but instead I think she’s nice. I’d like to be best friends with all of her characters.

On top of my list there’s Atonement, one of my favorite movies and favorite books. It’s rare to find such a well done transposition. Keira plays a perfect Cecilia Tallis, and her development of the character as the story enrolls is remarkable. Her wardrobe is too – the green dress is legendary. If you haven’t watched this movie you must asap. And read the book too!

The Edge of Love is less know but yet a great movie. Based on the life of poet Dylan Thomas, the movie is set in England during WWII and explores the life of the poet and the two women he loves and by whom he’s loved and their powerful friendship. It must be said that all the main characters deliver great performances: Keira KnightleySienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys.

Last Night is a beautiful and touching movie about relationships and betrayal (physical vs emotional). Keira plays Joanna, a young writer and wife who meets her long lost love while her husband is on a business trip and spends with him a long, nostalgic and passionate night wandering in NY. Her blue dress is stunning.

And even if I didn’t particularly enjoy the entire movie, I think that Juliet & Mark‘s story in Love Actually is very romantic and delicate. And easy to summarize:

Another of my favorite books is Never Let Me Go and since she stars in the movie adaptation I was led to believe that we may share the same reading taste! She plays Ruth.

And CHANEL. Oh, Chanel!

And, of course, I love it even more since Coco Mademoiselle is “my” fragrance.

Bicycle Race

To ride a bicycle is not only practical and environmental friendly, it’s also incredibly chic. Vintage chic.

Audrey Hepburn
Brigitte Bardot
Sophia Loren

or effortlessly modern chic

Ellen Page
Lara Stone

In fact riding a bike is so chic and fashionable right now that there are plenty of blogs on the subject. Among these I must mention the lovely Rides A Bike blog, which features photos of old Hollywood actors riding a bike.

The Sartorialist too has shot dozens of pretty people all over the world together with their bikes. Even Olivia Palermo.

Fashion designers have been well aware of this trend for a while so, for those who can afford it, couture bicycles are available. Unfortunately they are not equipped with a satellite alarm system.

My Favorite Beauty Products

Today I want to share my beauty routine. I’m quite lazy, so I don’t spend much time on it. But some of the products I use are really good so… let’s just spread the voice!

Bottega Verde’s Scrub Mask with Musk Rose oil and Rose-hips.

It smells good and is very delicate and suitable for sensitive skins.

I use it for the face and neckline and I must admit that it leaves the skin really smooth.

Bottega Verde is an Italian company which produces natural cosmetics.

Unfortunately the online store only ships to Italy.

 Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse

This oil spray is just wonderful! You can use it on your face, body and hair.

It dries in a sec and doesn’t stain the clothes.

I mix it with the Nivea cream to moisturize my legs and, alone, it has replaced my night cream.

The plus: smells like paradise!

You can buy it in pharmacies here in France where I discovered it’s a must.

KIKO’s 3 Phase Vitamin Oil

This nourishing oil really works!

My nails used to break all the time, and now that I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks they improved a lot.

This is a oil, you can’t apply it as a base for the regular nail polish.

It takes a really long time to dry out (don’t even know if it dries completely) after a while I just clean it up with a tissue.

KIKO’s No Transfer Foundation SPF 20

The label says: no transfer extra long lasting foundation with anti-age dna repairing complex, moisturizing and lightening effect.

Well, I don’t know about anti-age and dna repairing but I can tell you that this foundation is really moisturizing!

At the beginning it may seem at little bit greasy but after a couple of minutes the greasy sensation goes away and the skin is just soft and silky.

The plus: SPF 20 perfect for summer!

 KIKO’s Automatic Waterproof Eyeliner

Great eyeliner shaped as a pen and with a hard point that makes it really easy to apply.

I always forget to shake it, so sometimes the color is a bit weak.

The plus: doesn’t smudge.

  Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Eyeshadow

Love the color, love the texture, love the packaging!

I usually apply it with my fingertips, but the brush is really good! Is just that… I don’t know how to shade so I haven’t used it that much.

KIKO’s Luxurious Lashes Mascara

Love mascaras with big brushes and this is one of them!

It is very easy to apply, even to lower lashes and it doesn’t smudge.

Well, I haven’t tried it on very sad occasions.

Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick

I am not very much the lipstick type cause it usually makes me look really old, but this Bois De Rose is just perfect for my skin tone!

If you have olive complexion too you should try it!

  Estée Lauder Tender Lip Balm

Sorry for the picture, the label is barely readable, but that’s because this gloss is always in my purse.

It is in fact a lip balm and leaves your lips really silky, but it is also glossy, colored and glittered!

It is just perfect for the summer and it can replace the lipstick.

The plus: SPF 15

Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Toilette

Last but not least THE perfume.

I’ve been addicted to Coco Mademoiselle for a long time now, I think it’s so pleasant and you can never get tired of it.

This is the pocket -purse- version.

The plus: the rechargeable 20 ml package (you get 3) and you can take with you wherever you go!

A Romantic Touch

Blouse: Van Bery
Wish I could wear clothes like these every day. Feels like they are intended for a dreamy girl, deeply in love, with glossy hair… no, wait: that was the Miss Dior Chérie commercial.
Anyway, I did this collage ’cause I wanted to share with all of you romantic girls two brands I’m sure you’ll love as much as I do: the Swiss Van Bery and the Italian Mauro Leone.
Next week I’m going to raid Mauro Leone’s store in Turin! Hope to do the same to Van Bery’s soon!
